First Aid at Work Certificate
Duration: 4 Days
This EMAS approved course will equip those who wish to become First Aiders, or lapsed First Aiders, in all the essential aspects of occupational First Aid.
COURSE PROGRAMME:
DAY ONE • Introduction • Responsibilities of the First Aider • Action at an emergency situation • Self protection and personal hygiene • Rules of bandaging • First Aid boxes and kits • Circulatory system • Bleeding - external • Types of wound • Posture, elevation, examination and pressure (PEEP) • Shock - signs and symptoms • Treatment of shock
DAY TWO • Respiration and the respiratory system • Asphyxia - causes • Treatment of asphyxia • ABC drill • Introduction to cardiopulmonary resuscitation • Confirming obstruction of the airway • Cardiac arrest - a definition • Contributory factors for heart disease • Signs and symptoms of heart attacks • Pre hospital treatment for heart disorders • Chain of survival • Functions of nervous system • Causes of unconsciousness • Levels of responsiveness - AVPU • Management of head, eye and facial injuries • Fainting
DAY THREE • Functions of the skeleton • Fractures - definition and causes • Different types of fractures • Management of fractures in a pre-hospital environment • Sprains, strains and dislocations • Functions of the skin • Burns and scalds • Treatment of burns • Poisons and routes of entry • Treatment for ingestion of poison • Effects of electrical burns and treatment • Diabetes • Asthma • Epilepsy • Spinal injuries and Ac.Bc approach
DAY FOUR • Revision of CPR • Casualty transportation • Simple record keeping • Skills revision • Theory examination • Practical examination - an incident to treat • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation examination
Emergency Response Team Members
Duration: 2 Days
This course provides top quality Hot Fire, Breathing Apparatus, Chemical Spill, Fire Training in a variety of realistic situations and is run on a 2- 5 day training programme. Teams will learn all the correct procedures for all incidents that may confront them back on site. It is suitable for new ERT members from all sectors of industry and commerce.
Objectives On completion of the course participants should be able to: • operate a system of commands and procedures • understand the nature of fire and how to extinguish it with fire extinguishers and fire hoses • use every type of hand-held fire extinguisher in the right conditions • use correct procedures with hoses and branches • operate SCBA • Perform Search and Rescue in SCBA • fight Hot realistic fires • fight fire in a building, using Breathing Apparatus
Methods of training The course involves 90% practical training. The physical exertion involved means that all participants should be physically fit and free from any respiratory disorder or heart disease.
NB: Previous experience of Breathing Apparatus is required.
Troll stretcher training course
Duration: 0.5 Days
This ½ day programme outlines the setting up and rigging and tending of the troll stretcher.
AIM The training is designed to meet needs of organisations in the area of stretcher rescue. It will meet all standards for those who may be required to work in a rescue and participate in emergency procedures. It is also designed for those who have not received any training. It will take participants through progressive steps that will give them the confidence to prepare themselves with effect to emergency rescue procedures using the troll stretcher.
On completion of this course participants will be able to: • Describe the responsibilities of the rescue team • Describe Stretcher types (troll) • State the purpose use and the steps to be taken in rescue, using the stretcher • Work as a dedicated team • Show team leadership

Breathing Apparatus Training
Duration: 2 Days
Aim The aim of the course is to provide candidates with a full working knowledge of Self Contained Breathing Apparatus.
Objectives The objectives of the course are to enable candidates to understand the legislation relating to the wearing of Breathing Apparatus, to fully understand the functioning of all the working components of a BA set, to carry out pre use and routine checks, to correctly ‘don’ and ‘doff’ a BA set and to carry out exercises wearing full BA. The course is 25% classroom based and 75% practical to ensure wearers reach an acceptable level of familiarity wearing the set.
Who should attend? All those who may have a requirement to wear BA as part of their job or as part of an emergency procedure. It is suitable for those who have never worn BA or have not had training for a long period of time.
Breathing Apparatus Refresher
Duration: 1 Day
The Breathing Apparatus Refresher Course is suitable for those who have received formal certification in Breathing Apparatus. A refresher course should be undertaken by BA wearers at least once a year.
On completion of the course the candidates will be fully versed in routine and pre use checks, ‘donning’ and ‘doffing’ of the set, routine maintenance and decontamination procedures and will have carried out a number of refresher exercises whilst wearing SCBA
Command & Control Procedures
Duration: 1 Day
This one day course, aimed at those who will be required to manage emergency situations, covers the Incident Management System (IMS) which is the organisational mechanism used in an emergency scene. Such a system, also referred to as an Incident Command System, is an essential element for the safe and efficient management of emergency operations.
Other topics include: • The establishment of Zones and Areas, • Initial actions that should be taken by Incident Commander, • The role of the Incident Commander, • An overview of incident analysis and evaluation.
