Employers must safeguard work at height

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned employers to ensure they take proper precautions to prevent employees from falling from height.

The warning follows HSE’s prosecution of a Coventry company after an employee dislocated two fingers, fractured his left wrist and injured his eye socket after falling from a 3.5m high roof.

Thornett Mechanical Services Ltd, of Napier Street, Coventry, was fined a total of £2500 and ordered to pay costs of £2151.50 at Coventry Magistrates’ Court on 13th May 2009 after the company pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety legislation.

NI Workplace Death Figure Falls

Health and Safety Minister Arlene Foster has warned against complacency in the wake of the lowest recorded number of deaths at work in decades. Seven people lost their lives in work-related accidents in 2009, which is a 60% reduction on the previous year's figure.


Opening the ninth annual Health and Safety Professionals conference in Castlereagh on 21 April 2010, the Minister said: "While such a dramatic reduction is to be welcomed, it should not allow us to become complacent.


"Behind each statistic lies a heartbreaking story. Seven lives were lost last year, which in turn means seven families have been devastated by the unexpected death of a loved one."

BHB speak at IOSH Branch Meeting

The local Northern Ireland Branch of IOSH recently invited Kevin Howlette, Director, BHB Safety Specialists, to speak at their branch meeting in November 2009.

The topic of this event was 'Fire Risk Assessment' and it focussed on the practicalities of the assessment itself along with latest developments in fire legislation and implementation from the enforcer's perspective

Group Commander, Bill Majury, from NI Fire and Rescue Service also spoke on the day.

HSE Warning re: Confined Space Fatality
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is warning employers and staff of the dangers of working in confined spaces, following the prosecution of part of a multi-national group after two of its employees died while undertaking routine tasks in a Herefordshire factory.
